Human Trials
In the very first clinical trial of hoodia on humans, 24 morbidly obese persons were sent into a unit. The unit was closed and the people were not allowed to do anything except reading, interacting, eating and watching television. Hoodia gordonii was administered on 50% of the population, whereas the remaining wad subjected to a placebo. Post a period of fifteen days, the group of people administered hoodia showed reduction in calorie intake. The decrease was to the tune of 1000 calories per day. This was achieved without any external supplement including dieting and exercising. In terms of facts, on an average an American woman consumes around 1,900 calories and an American man consumes around 2,600 calories per day.
The above mentioned trial was small and this is why evidence from the Kalahari Bushmen remains most credible to establish hoodia’s efficacy. Many reporterss, who travelled to the Kalahari and ate raw hoodia, revealed that its affect remains for 24 hours if it is consumed in large amounts such as an 800mg dose. Phytopharm currently holds the patents and rights to p57. The company off late carried out a trial at a large scale. A group consisting of 60 individuals who were overweight was subject to placebo and p57. Later the effects of both were compared and analyzed. The short-term study showed that injecting p57 two times daily led to a dramatic effect and post a period of 15 days, the p57 group showed a reduction of 30% in their calorie consumption. In addition, the body fat also reduced by 1kg.
